“All you do is read all the time, who wants to do that for four years?”

When I came to Geneseo as a Freshman, I actually started out as a biology major. Then a few months passed and I realized that biology at Geneseo would not make me happy. Then I changed my major to Psychology because I was so interested in learning “how the brain really works.” The changing of majors didn’t stop there though, however, through changing majors so many times I begin to realize what I really wanted to do that I would enjoy in the future when I get a job. I always loved kids and after the Summer of 2014, it finally hit me, I wanted to be a teacher. So I then became an education major choosing to go the Early Childhood and Childhood route. Even after that I realized a bit more complications so I decided to switch to English with the hope of still being a teacher after undergrad. My plan is to finish up all my certifications in grad school and get my masters in Education at the same time. And thats when the speculations started…

For some reason, so many people are not too interested in the English field. Yes, they want to make sure they can read and analyze a passage, but as far as really going into depth and learning the ins and outs of the English world, it isn’t really enjoyed by much people. In Joseph Moran’s Interdisciplinarity,  he argues that any type of education should not be held at a higher standard than the other. He also quotes Aristotle and says that having a liberal education is something good within itself. Basically, someone who is well educated in their field of practice is of great value.

Okay, I will admit that being an English major comes  with hours on end of reading and understanding text, but the feeling of understanding a text is one of the best feelings ever. Being able to to apply my understanding of texts to my real world situations is the ultimate satisfaction. In closing, to all the English majors out there, embrace it, never feel like you are undereducated because of someone else who thinks their major is superior yours.

English rules!
