What Is Space Anyways?

As I write this blog post, I am filling space. Just as we wondered,  how we affect space and how space affects us. Moran’s Interdisciplinarity, never fails to be relevant at times we least expect it to be. When one reads a chapter titled, “Science, Space and Nature”  you might conclude that this chapter will have nothing to do with literature – and quite frankly it doesn’t. But while it is not directly referring to English as a subject, it is in fact emphasizing interdisciplinarity which thus, refers to English. We used our mini-field trip in class on Wednesday to deduce that as we act on space, space then acts on us and that space exists to somehow be filled.

My group used the space we were exploring on Wednesday to make connections with each other – what some may call “socializing” – but we had realized that with the space provided to us, and our want to make connections because that space allowed us the room to do so, we then found on a much smaller scale, interdisciplinarity between each other. Similarly, Toomer takes advantage of the space around him in real life to construct a piece of literature (which takes up space), and within that literature he uses space to drive his novel. We then act on the piece of space that he has produced due to space (Cane), and the space (the novel) then acts upon us through attainable knowledge/ideals/etc. Through Moran’s Interdisciplinarity, I have a newfound and great respect towards the idea that all disciplines have a role in each other – everything in essence is connected…all because of space.
