Stanley Fish

I am disgusted with myself that I let myself push this part of the course so far out of my brain to where I have days when I post multiple entries. But in my defense, this book makes me feel extremely dumb. Like, really really dumb. How can I be an English Major if I can’t get through this? (Que my read more to find out that I actually do it)

Never fear, I have found what I need to do to get through this and make my posts. I open the text and read a sentence that isn’t complete bull poop and go from there. I am on page 100 and am going to comment on Stanley Fish because his name made me smile. “Interdisciplinary developments within literacy studies such as deconstruction, post-structuralism and feminist theory have only succeeded in creating ‘metadisciplines’ with their own inward looking codes and practices (Fish 1994)” Fish wrote an essay “Being Interdisciplinary is So Very Hard to Do”.

First of all, woah. That’s a lot of big words and very little ideals in that quote that interdisciplinarity quoted and I quoted again. Since this is a blog post all about the book, I really hope I don’t have to cite my work of the book.  Anyway, Fish continues saying that interdisciplinarity is impossible because the activities of them all with just eat each other, you can’t blur your disciplinary lines.

This is not correct at all Fish because you absolutely can blur and  group a lot of literature together.  I don’t understand a whole lot of this book, but I do know that as people we like to put everything in it’s own place and we do like the create special categories for special combined pieces. I may not be taking this the right way but isn’t this saying you can’t have a historical poetry labeled historical poetry that it can only be under one or the other? English has come so far since when Fish wrote this paper, there’s been so many books, so many disciplines figured out! There is no reason to have something under one box when it can be described as filling the requirements out for both.  I don’t think focusing on the semantics of English is fun at all and it takes a lot of the heart of the writing to think in such boxy terms. You can have it all with your writing and have it be as disciplined as needed!
