Zulus, our society, stereotyping in times of trouble

Throughout the novel Zulus, it has become very clear that any person who strays from the thin, tall, white, character, is called out by one character or another. For example, on page 87, “Two men wanted the fat woman,” (Everett.) This regarded Alice, and “the fat woman” narrative carries throughout the whole novel, until she is no longer fat. When Alice narrates about Theodore Theodore he “did not fit the physical norm, being very short, under five feet,” (Everett 22.) The way Alice calls out specific physical characteristics of the people around her, emphasizes how during times of war, or turmoil, people turn to stereotyping.

Unfortunately, we can see that in the current state of our society, with the new president-elect. While we aren’t a war-torn country, Donald Trump has declared we are in a state of turmoil. He won his presidency by convincing the population that we are in trouble, and we need him to make us great, and get us out of all of these problems. By doing so, those who follow and support him, have turned to stereotyping, similar to the war state we see in Zulus. This occurs by separating “the illegals,” the women, “the blacks,” “the gays,” and so on and so forth. By calling out, and separating people in this manor, it only perpetuates the issues. Similar to what we can see in Zulus. By separating people, and calling everyone out on their appearance, it leads to a lot of fighting, abandonment, distrust, and more negative states of being.
