As of late, Travi$ Scott has been one of my favorite rappers.

I’ve been listening to a lot of his new music recently, to the unique sounds he makes, the music he chooses for the background, the overall feel of the song. I find his sound so interesting, and I can see a lot of other artists inside of the sound that he creates– almost like an intertextual composer. (Like my high school Photography teacher told us, so much art has already been created.  It’s nearly impossible to create a work of art that has never been made or used before.  In this way, it is the role, responsibility even, of the artist to somehow take this template and make it different, make a re-creation that refuses to conform to the old art piece.  This same concept can really apply to all things, music especially.)  This is what I think he does, he reinvents the wheel, sonically. SUNY Geneseo, being the Liberal Arts college that it is, requires that students take courses that range from several different disciplines in order to expose them to something they may enjoy, and to simply open them to a field that is enlightening, knowledgeable, and intellectually challenging.  This of course is crucial and necessary in breeding well-rounded academics that can graduate from Geneseo and have a wealth of knowledge that covers several different areas of study that will be useful to them in future career endeavors.

When I first looked at the general education requirements I would need to complete in order to graduate from SUNY Geneseo, the list looked taunting and slightly overwhelming.  However, being a first semester sophomore now, I’ve completed all of my “gen. eds.” which spanned across the Sciences, Maths, Writing, and Cultural Studies.  I’ve completed all of these except for the *dreaded* Humanities courses.

While scrolling through Facebook the other day (in likely one of my I’m-procrastinating-doing-my-schoolwork moments), I passed this picture that one of my friends shared.  The title said, “A Microbiologist Recreated ‘Starry Night’ With Bacteria In A Petri Dish.”  The first thought that occurred to me while reading this was, Oh yeah! Interdisciplinarity!

Too often, those whose are concentrated on the Sciences and those on the Humanities are defiant when it comes to allowing the two fields to dance with one another.  You’ll often hear a science major claim, “I couldn’t draw to save my life.” And you can often hear me say, “I couldn’t conceptualize chemistry to save my life.”  Though recognizing your weaknesses can be important, this constant beating down on one’s self doesn’t allow for room to grow.
