Interdisciplinarity and Choosing A Masters Program

In the class before this, on the last day of classes nonetheless, I was forced to answer the biggest question: “Now what?”, and this wasn’t asking what I was getting for lunch, it was asking what I was going to do with my English passion after college. I just got here! This seems to be an extremely inquisitive question for a 10:30 class as a sophomore, but an important one nonetheless, regardless of graduating year. It’s something we all have to think about, and as an English Major, it’s a hard one. Will I be forced to become a starving artist, writing abstract pieces of poetry, only for myself and “the art world” to see? Who knows? I sure don’t. But I can tell you this: the concept of Interdisciplinarity has helped me come to an answer, and that is to use your resources.

Resources, being people, the internet, anything. I think that’s the beauty of Interdisciplinarity, really. If we were to all use people we know, such as people in the same organization who have a hundred different strengths and talents that we would not have otherwise, we truly have the world.

Be it a sorority, fraternity, team, club, or even people that are just in the same residence hall as yourself, we all have an ARCHIVE (haha) of knowledge that is available to us. Thanks to the internet, we have more information than one could ever want to know or need. But in my search in trying to find a master’s program in Creative Writing, I found that I didn’t even know where to start. How do you look for something that you’re not sure how to find? Like the Beatles say, “I get by with a little help from my friends”, I certainly did, and this was less than an hour ago.

Turns out my best resource happened to be a Political Science Major with a knack to putting a plethora of information to use in her poems. Who knew? I didn’t. But to start, I suggest that you just ask around. Talking about the future is a great conversation starter, and in this way, you can expand your interdisciplinary knowledge, whilst making friends. Finding a master’s program is something I have always avoided, because it all seems so scary, but thanks to my friends helping me navigate using their own ARCHIVES of knowledge to help, it may not be so bad. 🙂
