Expect the Unexpected

On my way to class I heard a few people talking about the author and poet Edgar Allan Poe. They were discussing about their assignment on him and how if the police officers could hear the heartbeat why did they not say anything. I was confused when they said it so I decided to do some research on him. I figured out it was The Tell Tale Heart, which is about a guy who kills this old man out of paranoia. Throughout the story cops come to check things out. He than hear the old man’s heart beat as if he was alive even though he is under the floorboard. At the end he confesses to the police officers out of insanity.

This reminded me of The Defiant Ones , which is a movie about two men one African American and the other Caucasian who are shackled together and survive as they are being chased by cops. In this the two men have to evade the police. In the end they end up getting caught and do not struggle at all. The Defiant Ones and The Tell Tale Heart remind me of each other because in the beginning they both try so hard in order to evade the officers and then in the end they get caught almost willingly.

In the Defiant Ones Tony and Sidney were so close at evading the police by getting on a train. Sadly only one of them was not able too make it causing the other to fall off in the process. In The Tell Tale Heart the character tried so hard to not be suspicious that he finally went crazy that he willingly tells the police what he had done in the end. Both show that things don’t always go the way you expect them to go.
