A Final Wrap (English 203 Final Essay)

Group work can sometimes come across as frustrating and unfair due to the fact that people tend to take advantage of this opportunity and not do work. This then creates a opportunity for people to slack off or not contribute to the assignments. As I read through the syllabus at the beginning of the semester, these were my exact thoughts. I was not looking forward to all the group work that was being assigned. Usually, when I would get group assignments, I would tend to push most of the weight with maybe another person. This was very frustrating at the time. Even when told that the other people in the group did not contribute, the professors usually did not care enough to do anything. In some incidents the professor would do something but it would just be a slap on the wrist. This caused me a lot of stress and anxiety when it came to group work.

An End to a New Beginning

As we are moving towards the end of the semester we are either finishing up work or stressing over finals. Some maybe doing both as I am doing. Work piles up at many unexpected moments. I tried the best I could do to balance all my work for other classes, but even planning life down to the last minute could backfires. I was stressed and panicking because I have not done all my blog post and I was also getting new assignments from my other classes. During this period of stress I decided to watch a movie called, “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”.

Christmas Spirit

*Spoilers ahead*

Since Christmas has been coming up I have been binge watching Christmas shows and movies with my friends. Almost all of them have to do with romance. I came across to this movie called A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding. In this movie the main character Amber has her own blog which reminded me of the blog post I have to do. In the movie Amber is becoming queen of a country and goes through some difficulties. The country is going into turmoil due to money problems. People are losing their jobs and are protesting against her future husband Richard.

Expect the Unexpected

On my way to class I heard a few people talking about the author and poet Edgar Allan Poe. They were discussing about their assignment on him and how if the police officers could hear the heartbeat why did they not say anything. I was confused when they said it so I decided to do some research on him. I figured out it was The Tell Tale Heart, which is about a guy who kills this old man out of paranoia. Throughout the story cops come to check things out. He than hear the old man’s heart beat as if he was alive even though he is under the floorboard. At the end he confesses to the police officers out of insanity.

Poet to College Student

As we arrived to class we started to talk about the reading that was assigned. It was to read Zulus in Re:f(gesture) by Percival Everett. We then split into groups and started talking about what the poems are and our interpretation of them. They were abecedarian poems but they were not exact like an actual abecedarian poem. Percival Everett had his own way of creating poetry. An Abecedarian poem is a type of acrostic poem that is arranged by alphabetical order, the initial line beginning with the first letter of the alphabet. When I first heard of this it reminded me of the alphabet song that we all used to learn in elementary school.

Is fear learned?

Epistemophilia is the drive to know/ the love of knowledge, while Epistemophobia is defined as the morbid and irrational fear of knowledge. But what is truly the real definition of knowledge in this context? Every person has their own way of taking things in and learning. But is the fear of learning learned? The answer in my opinion is yes. A fear is just an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. In my experiences knowledge does not cause any of theses things.

A different perspective

We were told that today would not be an easy day. We would be covering a heavy topic and if anyone wanted to take breaks during the lesson they were free to do so. We would be shown “some videos that will help set the literature in context, deepen our understanding of history, and bring us closer to linking feeling and thinking about what’s being done to humanity”(Beth McCoy, email).

A New Beginning

High school graduation is the epitome of life. It can be an accomplishment signaling adulthood. It can also mean the end of mandatory classes that we didn’t want and a start of sleeping in or starting to work. On the other hand, college is often thought of a new beginning to help start a career and assist us in finding ourselves (while also being in thousands of dollars in debt). All in all, it is the first time that as young adults we get to choose to further our education and decide that we want to go to school. We are not pressured into waking up at 5 am to get to school at 6 am or 7 am. We are finally given a choice.

Throughout my education school was something that I dreaded waking up for. Now that it is my choice I still do just not as much. Tuition is not cheap so ‘i have to deal with it’ until I get stuck in a job that I worked hard to get to. Is there a point to this? I wonder every time I wake up to go to class. “It will work out in the end,” I tell myself.

I found myself taking this reader and text class without having a clue what I would be doing in the future. To be honest, I still don’t know what lies ahead. But there’s a reason why I decided to change my major last minute, and why I am taking this class. Is this foreshadowing like how Pentheus’s fate was very early on in Bacchae? The scene when Tiresias warns Pentheus not to offend the gods, or he will suffer the same fate as Actaeon,” whom the carnivorous hounds he reared tore apart when he boasted that he was better at hunting than Artemis.”

If you’re wondering ‘why am I writing about this’? Well, the reason is that you are reading this. We chose a path to further our education. That is why you are reading this blog post right now. Whether you’re a student or professor, this is the path we decided to take. There were many other choices that we could have made but we chose this.
