An End to a New Beginning

As we are moving towards the end of the semester we are either finishing up work or stressing over finals. Some maybe doing both as I am doing. Work piles up at many unexpected moments. I tried the best I could do to balance all my work for other classes, but even planning life down to the last minute could backfires. I was stressed and panicking because I have not done all my blog post and I was also getting new assignments from my other classes. During this period of stress I decided to watch a movie called, “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”.

This movie begins present day, with this man, Joel,  going of his days track randomly ditching work to get on this train. He runs into this random girl, into which they hit it off immediately. They go out on a nice date and they genuinely connect.

After this we see the main character Joel going through heartbreak, and his ex girlfriend, Clementine, has had him erased from her memory after a year long relationship. Joel then decides that he is going to eradicate her from his memory as well to minimize his pain. Most of the movie is him reliving all these memories and realizing he doesn’t want to lose her at all. He tries to keep her by escaping to other memories and such, but in the end it doesn’t work.

Yet at the end they are back to the present and, a woman that worked in the office that erased the minds of people sent out tapes of their reasoning behind the erasing. In the end these two characters are together again and happy.

I feel that this is a metaphor for life. even if you think everything is going great there is going to be a certain point in which it is not. It usually happens when you least expect it. This movie reminded me of how at the beginning of the semester I was not rushing to finish my work for other classes including this one. In the middle of my journey I decided to stop rushing and take in everything in, which is like when Joel still wanted to have his memories and decided to not erase his memory of Clementine. Throughout my time in this class I decided to stop and think about the decisions I made. In the end it turned out all I had to do was take a break and absorb everything.
