Painful as XVZ

Structure is very evident in our daily lives as Katherine Johnson mentions in her blog post Easy as ABC, but structure is only for those that are more fortunate. We can see structure in our ABCs and in the general structure of how our day is going to be, but some may not have their ABCs or live a day with certainty in their lives.

In Percival Everett’s I AM NOT SIDNEY POITIER, a character named Bobo, who lost his parents and lives with his blind sister, does not have the luxury of structure. When Bobo realized that he was told by two runaway prisoners that he was about to leave his godforsaken home he asked, “And I kin go to school, too?” (Everett 78). Bobo is unable to speak proper English and has been living in isolation without any proper education. Bobo may very well not know his ABCs. Bobo is also unable to realize that the structure of his situation is very fickle because he is harboring two prisoners that he just met, and is expecting them to keep their promise of leaving with him, which does not happen.

In the border between the United States and Mexico, there is no structure, but chaos. Central American refugees are attempting to flee from their countries by the thousands to escape from the tyranny of their government. Caravans are constructed to provide a structure for these refugees to escape, but they are being deterred with tear gas and imprisoned if they attempt to cross the border [1]. The structure of the US government is also being compromised because legally the US has to take in refugees [2]. There is no structure for these unfortunate refugees even when it was promised.

Structure can be seen quite often in the life of an American citizen, but for people that are less fortunate, there is more chaos than structure. Bobo has never received a formal education and he is likely to be unable to structuralize and see the chaos of his situation. Central American refugees were promised some form of structure in their lives, but due to their unfortunate circumstance, they are experiencing chaos. Structure is essential, but it is not everywhere.
